Rrrrotary learns about Telepharm

Talk Like A Pirate Day

September 19 was International Talk Like A Pirate Day. Thank you Ed Lins for again being the hip cat in the club.

"Aaarrrg! Gimme the 4-way test or you can walk the plank, matey!"

Welcome Emily Johnson!

Denise Erpelding gives a Rotary name badge to new corporate member, Emily Johnson.

Welcome, Emily! FWIW, Emily sings really well.

Senior Active

Congratulations to these Rotarians that earned their Senior Active pin! You earn that pin when your age plus years served equals 80. You do the math. Just for clarification, Denise is in the pic for some other award.

Habitat for Humanity Update from Ray Poe

The Washington Habitat build has started!  It is very exciting to see the walls go up and meet the volunteers who are donating their time to help a family from the community

Right now we have Fridays and Saturdays in September scheduled as build days, with both morning and afternoon time slots.  If Rotarians would like to volunteer as a group, please let me know and we can reserve one of the time slots for you.  If you'd like a different day besides a Friday or Saturday, we can arrange that as well!

If people want to join us individually to volunteer, they can go to our website to sign up.

Hannah's Blog

Hannah Purner, our Rotary youth exchange student from Austria, has a blog about her stay in Iowa this year. Its witty. Check it out here.

Telepharm

Thanks to Caleb Wilson for having Roby Miller talk about the company he started, Telepharm. His company could be a big deal.

Roby's step dad, Todd Thompson, is also co-founder of Reliant Long Term Care Pharmacy in Washington (where Caleb works).

Roby Miller
Telepharm is making small town pharmacies viable again. Here is why that market segment exists:

Water for Haiti

Don't forget that Tuesday, September 24th is a FAMSCO Work Day in Iowa City! Let Becky Patterson know if you'd like to volunteer some time.

Water for Haiti

Rotarian Ryan Walker gave a great talk about Water for Haiti, a faith based, non-denominational organization where he and his wife Shannon, volunteer their time, energy, and money. He had some great stories about fixing schools, and drilling and servicing wells and pumps in rural Haiti.

Ryan gets his wish - to sign his name in a Rotary book for the Library

Shanon explains whats really going on to John Winga and Grandpa Harvey Holden.

Pics of the Rotary Turkey Dinner

From the back of the napkin, it looks like we served about 600 meals on Monday night! Well over half were carry-out dinners, and there were 50 walk-ins that bought tickets at the door. We sold about 680 tickets, so a chunk went unused.

The coleslaw gang was hard at work early in the day.

Over half of the dinners served are carry-out.

Coralville North Corridor Club Pres., Royce Phillips came down to the dinner.
He's also a candidate for Senate District 39 that Sandy Greiner is retiring from...

Susan Wellington and Jacque Andrew share a moment at the dine-in ticket table.

Becky and Hannah ask "How about a piece of pie, honey?"

Bob Kennedy considers the existential meaning of the double broiler pan.

Ed Lins knows what work looks like.

Dick Colby touches all the dinner rolls.

while Myron Graber and Kent Dallmeyer work in the background.

Congratulations on completing UI Law School, Ken Kitchin!

Mark Kendall is just the right height for that sink.

Caleb Wilson asks "you want a piece of me?" of an impatient
customer eyeing an empty turkey breast pan,
while in the background, Bob Wollenberg braces for the impending impact.

The troops sing Russian folksongs to stay upbeat while drying silverware and glasses.

Dr. Rob Negrete swoops in to get the clean-up started.

Rotary talks Student Youth Exchange

Don't forget, the Rotary Turkey Dinner is Monday, September 9th at the United Methodist Church. Turn in your ticket money to Susan Wellington at Lending Hands or Jim Mostek at Washington State Bank. Click here to review your work assignments and times...

Dr. Ann Harris wants to remind everyone about our fundraiser on Tuesday, Oct. 1 at Unc N Neph's. Bring a (non-Rotarian) friend and have dinner. Rotary gets a cut of food sales that night!

Hannah!

It was great to hear from Rotary Youth Exchange student Hannah Purner from Austria (standing in front of the Kiwanis banner). She is a student at Washington High School and currently staying with the Horaks.

Dr. Ann Harris talks American culture with Hannah.

It was a pleasure to welcome Emily Johnson, daughter and business partner of Rotarian Barry Johnson. She is a new corporate member from Barry Johnson Financial Services, LLC (BJFS). Sadly, the picture was too blurry even for this newsletter...  Welcome, Emily!

Thanks to Michelle (Peiffer) Redlinger for inviting Phil Rabinowitz, Engineering Manager at Modine since June. Phil was a Rotarian back in Oklahoma and it is great to have him here in Washington.

Phil is pictured here between Rotarian Kierstan Peck and current husband, Nic Sabatke. Happy 30th Birthday, Kierstan!

John Moenck, doing his Jack Benny impersonation, asked the club to consider helping to sort cans at WCDC to help with its backlog. Moenck said he is a board director at WCDC and they get some significant income from sorting cans. Hands were raised by Rotarians to help out.

Rotary seemed a little cheerier for having Ed Lins' smiling face back at lunch.

Student Youth Exchange

For Brent Hinson's program today, Chris Knapp of the Iowa City AM club told us about the relationships that District 6000 has built around the world with other Rotary Districts that result in positive student youth exchange opportunities. He said that District 6000 has one of the best reputations in the nation.

Knapp also challenged the club to be more vigilant to work toward getting the youth that we have invested so much time and money in programs like scholarships, RYLA, Student Youth Exchange, and others to become Rotarians. He said that around the District and around the country, Rotary clubs have done a poor job of engaging those youth.

There was some great Q&A.

Knapp said that there were students in District 6000 from:
  • Austria (yeah)
  • Brazil
  • France
  • Germany
  • Italy
  • Mexico
  • South Korea
  • Spain
