Habitat for Humanity, Kirkwood & Membership

On August 15...

Thanks to Ray Poe for having Mark Patton of Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity visit with us about their future plans with Washington County. The Washington County chapter recently merged with the Iowa City based Iowa Valley chapter.

Mark Patton has been with Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity for 22 years, and the last 7 as Executive Director.

Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity is planning to begin a new home start on Washington's north side, in Highland subdivision. Previously, Washington County's Habitat had built 17 homes around the County.

On August 22nd...

Tera Pickens pleads with her hands for everyone (everyone) to think about taking a Kirkwood Continuing Education class. Would that kill you?

Tera also asked everyone (everyone) to please click here to take Kirkwood's quick (short) survey about what to offer on Continuing Education here in Washington County. Thank you in advance for your participation, Rotarians!

Keep in mind, Raber is probably keeping track of who clicks (or doesn't click) on the Survey link for Kirkwood...

Susan Wellington uses her hands to encourage everyone to grow the club membership by inviting someone to Rotary.

Nancy Rash talks Turkey

Thanks to Nancy Rash for being so cheerful as she tells us our assignments for the September 9 Rotary Turkey Dinner at the United Methodist Church.

Remember, this is our Club's biggest fund raiser and how we provide student scholarships!

Thanks in advance to Bob Ruppert for selling well into 3 figures of tickets. Thanks to all the Rotarians for selling your allotment of 10+ tickets!  That is how we get to 600+ dinners.

Nancy Rash cheerfully tells us all what to do.

Here are things Nancy wants us to keep in mind:

  • Sell your allotment of tickets by Thursday, August 29th! That is what Susan needs to get a final meal count.
  • Bring your ticket money to Rotary on Aug 15, 22 or 29.
  • Click here to check the work assignments. If you cannot make your work assignment, contact Cheryl Kurtz (m 863-3132) if you have a morning or afternoon shift, or Craig Davis (w 653-5431) if your shift is 4pm or later.
  • Wear a Rotary shirt to work your shift, and to eat.  There are Rotary shirts in the Y's Men Room, and Don Patterson (m 461-6418) has t-shirts.

Everett Burham

We are all saddened by the passing of Everett Burham. Our condolences go out to his wife, Ione Burham, who has been a faithful volunteer and leader to Washington Rotary by assisting with the planning and implementation of our Turkey Dinner for many years. Rotary is planning to send flowers in support of Ione (although the board will formally vote on this Thursday morning).

Everett's memorial service will be at 11:00am on Sunday, August 18, in conjunction with the regular church service at the United Methodist Church. Click here to read his obituary.

Camera Angle

For anyone that was wondering about how much taller Sue and Kyle Basten seemed next to Becky Patterson in last weeks update, here is another view of Sue and Becky. It just goes to show that it is all about the camera angle.

Rotary hears about RYLA from Kyle Basten

It was great to hear about Kyle Basten's experience at RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) this year at Wartburg College in Waverly. This is the first year of District 6000 (our Rotary District in Southern Iowa) joining with District 5970 in Northern Iowa to sponsor a week-long experience for young people.

It was great to hear Kyle's impressions and experiences. He said that he hoped to return as a councilor next year.

Sue Basten and Kyle Basten make a sandwich of Club President, Becky Patterson.

This is the inside cover page of the book Rotary will donate to the Washington Library in August in honor of our speakers. Note the Rotary "book plate" and Kyle's signature in the book! The book is called "When Crayons Stop Working."
