Climate Change heats up Rotary

Phil Rabinowitz
Phil Rabinowitz informed the club that he has accepted an engineering position at an company on the east coast. This isn't his last Rotary club meeting in Washington, but close. Thanks for being a great part of Washington Rotary, Phil!

PISARIK TALKS CLIMATE CHANGE

Thanks to Ray Poe for having Washington High School science teacher, Joe Pisarik come to speak about climate change.

Here is a link to the national wind map that Pisarik referenced. Its kind of mesmerizing.

Rotary talks Student Youth Exchange

Don't forget, the Rotary Turkey Dinner is Monday, September 9th at the United Methodist Church. Turn in your ticket money to Susan Wellington at Lending Hands or Jim Mostek at Washington State Bank. Click here to review your work assignments and times...

Dr. Ann Harris wants to remind everyone about our fundraiser on Tuesday, Oct. 1 at Unc N Neph's. Bring a (non-Rotarian) friend and have dinner. Rotary gets a cut of food sales that night!

Hannah!

It was great to hear from Rotary Youth Exchange student Hannah Purner from Austria (standing in front of the Kiwanis banner). She is a student at Washington High School and currently staying with the Horaks.

Dr. Ann Harris talks American culture with Hannah.

It was a pleasure to welcome Emily Johnson, daughter and business partner of Rotarian Barry Johnson. She is a new corporate member from Barry Johnson Financial Services, LLC (BJFS). Sadly, the picture was too blurry even for this newsletter...  Welcome, Emily!

Thanks to Michelle (Peiffer) Redlinger for inviting Phil Rabinowitz, Engineering Manager at Modine since June. Phil was a Rotarian back in Oklahoma and it is great to have him here in Washington.

Phil is pictured here between Rotarian Kierstan Peck and current husband, Nic Sabatke. Happy 30th Birthday, Kierstan!

John Moenck, doing his Jack Benny impersonation, asked the club to consider helping to sort cans at WCDC to help with its backlog. Moenck said he is a board director at WCDC and they get some significant income from sorting cans. Hands were raised by Rotarians to help out.

Rotary seemed a little cheerier for having Ed Lins' smiling face back at lunch.

Student Youth Exchange

For Brent Hinson's program today, Chris Knapp of the Iowa City AM club told us about the relationships that District 6000 has built around the world with other Rotary Districts that result in positive student youth exchange opportunities. He said that District 6000 has one of the best reputations in the nation.

Knapp also challenged the club to be more vigilant to work toward getting the youth that we have invested so much time and money in programs like scholarships, RYLA, Student Youth Exchange, and others to become Rotarians. He said that around the District and around the country, Rotary clubs have done a poor job of engaging those youth.

There was some great Q&A.

Knapp said that there were students in District 6000 from:
  • Austria (yeah)
  • Brazil
  • France
  • Germany
  • Italy
  • Mexico
  • South Korea
  • Spain
